SEAToday.com, Bali - The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Bali's unique agricultural irrigation system, Subak.

UNESCO Deputy Director General Xing Qu spoke at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali on Wednesday (5/22).

"Protecting water-related cultural heritage, like Subak, is crucial to addressing 21st-century water challenges," he stated.

Subak, a millennia-old irrigation system, continues to thrive today. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 29, 2012, and its preservation remains a priority.

Xing Qu further elaborated on UNESCO's initiatives to promote sustainable water management. These include educational programs on water management, capacity building, and facilitating cooperation on shared water resources.
