SEAToday.com, Kuala Lumpur – Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Syarif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, stated that the recovery and reconstruction of the area affected by the sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India are expected to take 3 to 6 months.
The work will cover a 200-metre stretch from Wisma Yakin to the Police Post on Jalan Masjid India. The area is currently cordoned off with barriers to facilitate repairs, and thorough investigations into the underground utility systems.
Mayor Maimunah also stated that inspections of the underground utility systems, involving agencies like Indah Water Konsortium and Air Selangor. It will be time-consuming because it includes checks for potential pipe leaks.
Telecommunications companies will also be involved in inspecting the underground cables. It is reported that the department of minerals and geoscience will also provide comprehensive technical reports and data concerning soil stability in the affected area.
Further, a special committee established on August 25, is deliberating on the subsequent actions to be taken.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Maimunah, assured that while traders can continue their operations the public is urged to avoid crossing the police barriers and to use designated pedestrian paths to prevent further incidents.
The reconstruction efforts began a day after authorities halted the search and rescue operations for the missing Indian tourist.
The search was officially called off on Saturday, nine days after she fell into a sinkhole in front of Malayan Mansion on August 23.
It is known that her family held a final prayer ceremony at Jalan Masjid India before returning home on Sunday afternoon.
